The cost of feeding staff and patients varies from 8d. to Is. 3d.
per head per day, according to the number of patients in Hospital.
During the year 143 cases were admitted; of these i0i
were notified to be suffering from Scarlet Fever, and 42 from
Diphtheria. In three of the latter no clinical symptoms of
Diphtheria were apparent on admission, and no Diphtheria bacilli
were obtained from swabs taken from their throatsmoreover
one of these cases had all the symptoms of Measles on admission,
so that one for certain and probably all three of these were cases
of mistaken diagnosis in the first instance.
Twenty.nine of the Scarlet Fever and 9 of the Diphtheria
cases were admitted from Friern Barnet.
In February and May there were outbreaks of Measles and
Chicken Pox respectively in the Scarlet Fever wards due to
children developing these diseases some days after their admission
for Scarlet Fever, the infection of which they caught before
admission into the Hospital, either at the same time or before
they contracted Scarlet Fever. This prevented the admission of
other cases of Scarlet Fever for several weeks into the infected
wards, which were disinfected before the admission of any further
cases.
There was one death during the year from Diphtheria.
The average times of detention in Hospital, excluding the
case which ended fatally in a few days after admission, were:—
For Scarlet Fever 48 days, and for Diphtheria 36 days.
