POPULATION.
The census returns of 1901 showed that in this District
the number of inhabitants to each occupied house averaged
from 5.1 to 5.3, according to the locality. Taking this as the
basis of calculation, the population at Midsummer, 1908, was
32,000, an increase of 3,500 over that of the previous year.
This increase is chiefly accounted for by the number of
new houses occupied during the year, of which there were
151 in North Southgate and 516 in South Southgate.
The natural increase of the population by excess of
births over deaths was 419, as against 388 in the previous
year.
The population of North Southgate was 10,300, and that
of South Southgate was 21,700.
BIRTH —BIRTH-RATE.
During the year 659 births were registered, an increase
of 54 over the preceding year. This gives a birth-rate of
20'6 per 1,000 of the population, a decrease of '6 per 1,000 on
the preceding year.
The average rate for the previous 10 years was 22.6.
The birth-rate for North Southgate was 21.3, and that for
South Southgate 20'2.
The birth-rate in England and Wales was 26.5, which is
0'2 above the rate in 1907, which was the lowest rate on
record ; compared with the average of the previous 10 years
the birth-rate in 1908 showed a decrease of 1.6.
MORTALITY.
General Mortality and Death-rate.—The number of
deaths which occurred in the District during the last year was
207. To these must be added the deaths of 41 "residents"
who died in Institutions outside the district—12 in Edmonton
Union; 5 in Napsbury Asylum; 5 in the Great Northern
Hospital, Holloway; 3 in the Passmore Edwards' Hospital,
Wood Green; and 16 in various London Hospitals and
Institutions ; whilst the death of 8 " non-residents " who died
in the District—4 in the Metropolitan Asylums Board
Hospital, Winchmore Hill, and 2 in the Isolation Hospital,
Palmers Green, and 2 elsewhere—must be subtracted, leaving
a nett total of deaths belonging to the District of 240.
