Water Supply.— Practically the whole District is now
supplied by the Metropolitan Water Board. There are now
only 10 wells left from which water is obtained for drinking.
These are scattered about North Southgate. There was
reason to analyse the water from 5 wells, 2 of which proved
to be unsatisfactory, and were consequently closed.
Watercourses.—Bounds Green Brook and Pymmes
Brook remain in about the same condition. The periodical
cleaning by the Middlesex County Council helps to keep them
from getting very foul.
House Refuse Collection. — Refuse and dust are
collected from almost every house weekly, and taken to a
shoot at Highfield Road. Rapid progress has been recently
made with the Dust Destructor Works, and I am glad to
report that the destructor may be expected to be in full
working order early in the coming spring.
Collection of Fish Offal. —Air-tight receptacles have
been provided by the Council, in which fish offal is collected
from the fish shops from one to three times a week, according
to the weather and the quantity of fish consumed locally. It is
then carted to a convenient shoot acquired by the Council for
the purpose, and there disposed of. A small charge is made
the fishmongers to cover the expenses.
During the year 1,126 pails were collected, as against
919 in the preceding year.
Roads.—In the District there are now over 44 miles of
roads, made up as follows:—
Miles. Yards.
County Main Roads 4 1,356
Other Roads (repairable by the
inhabitants at large) 28 1,708
Private Roads (repairable by the
owners of property abutting on
such Roads) 10 1,176
