The following information is given with reference to
the unsatisfactory samples; -
Cheese: This was a sample of cheese which was described as
"cream cheese'. A cream cheese must contain at least 50
per cent, of fat to be properly described as such, and the
fat content of this sample fell well below that amount.
The retailer appeared to be unaware of the usual terms for
the correct description of cheese of this type and an
official caution was issued.
Merchandise Marks Acts 1887 = 1953 The majority of the
inspection work carried out under the provisions of the
above Acts relates to ensuring that the requirements of
the Act of 1926, and which relate to the marking with an
indication of origin on certain imported foodstuffs when
exposed for sale or sold, are compl#-: with. Inspections
were made on 78 separate premises of 237 displays of meat,
apples, tomatoes, poultry, butter and dried fruit. No
serious infringements were reported and minor departures
from the statutes were dealt with by verbal warning.
Labelling of Food Order, 1953 This Order requires prepacked
food to be marked with the name and address, or with
the registered trade mark, of the packer or labeiler. It
also requires that such food be labelled with its common
or usual name (if any) and in the case of a compounded food
with the names of the ingredients in descending order of
proportion by weight. It also controls the manner in which
the presence of vitamins and minerals is disclosed, and
prescribes the specific labelling of certain foods. A
total of 306 articles of pre-packed food was examined at 58
premises to ascertain whether the above requirements were
complied with. No serious infringements of this Order were
detected.
False or Misleading Descriptions Pood labels and advertisements
have been scrutinised for false or misleading statements
and descriptions. Inspections under this heading are
combined with work under the Merchandise Marks Act and the
Labelling of Pood Order. Corrective action taken within
the Boroughs and examples of such action are:-
Oranges.. tangerines and grapefruit described
as 'seedless' but found to contain seeds.
Cream doughnuts and jam sponges containing
imitation cream.
Claims that "Instant Coffee" was 100 per cent,
pure coffee, when it was in fact dehydrated
extract of coffee.
Safe Milk In addition to the foregoing, four samples of
raw milk were procured within your District and submitted
to test for the presence of tubercle bacilli. None was
found contaminated.
