One thousand eight hundred and twenty-six complaints were
received from the public in 1950 regarding the following matters:—
Defective drains and sanitary fittings 301
Defective water fittings and pipes 22
Defective or dirty walls and ceilings 12
Defective roofs and gutters 10
Defective fireplaces and flues 11
Defective doors and windows 5
Defective sinks, baths and wash basins 8
Defective floors 5
Defective dustbins 28
Dampness 26
Other housing defects 37
Infestation by vermin (bed bugs and fleas) 17
Infestation by insects (including ants, mosquitoes,
flies, wasps, etc.) 114
Infestation by rats and mice 849
Accumulation of refuse and manure 35
Animals kept in such a state as to be a nuisance 16
Gipsy encampments 5
Insanitary conditions of ponds and ditches 8
Unsatisfactory housing conditions and overcrowding

Aged or infirmed persons and dirty tenants 1

The number of complaints received in 1950 compared with
1,704 received in 1949 show the growing tendency of the public
to make use of the facilities provided by the Public Health
Department.
