5. Rent Act, 1957
During the year the Public Health Inspectors made 54
inspections in connection with the requirements of this Act. These
inspections dealt with applications for Certificates of Disrepair,
checking Undertakings made by owners, and inspecting the works
carried out to remedy the defects and disrepair.
The 'ollowing is a summary of the matters dealt with during
the year:—

9. SHOPS ACT, 1950
Mr. F. Titterton, M.I.S.A.A., The Council's Shops Act
Inspector, who works under the supervision of the Chief Public
Health Inspector, has submitted the following report on the
various duties for which he is responsible.
(a) Shops nd Offices Legislation
For those who looked forward to the implementation of the
Gowers Report (Cmd. 7664) on Health, Welfare and Safety in
Non-lndustrial Employment were again disappointed when the
Minister c Labour on the 1st November, 1961, in a written answer
said:—
"As my right hon. Friend the Home Secretary told the
House on 28th July, 1960, the Government had intended to
introduce a Bill on this subject before the Offices Act, 1960,
entered into force on 1st January, 1962. The programme of
essential legislation for the current Session is, however,
already so full that it has been reluctantly decided that there
