5. Rent Act, 1957.
This Act came into operation on the 6th July, 1957, and replaced
the Housing Repairs and Rents Act, 1954. The object of that part of
the Act, which imposes duties on the Health Department, is to permit
owners of controlled properties to increase the rents to a sum equal to
twice the gross rateable value, provided the house is kept in a satisfactory
state of repair.
During the year the Public Health Inspectors made 314 inspections
in connection with the requirements of the Act. These inspections
dealt with applications for Certificates of Disrepair, checking Undertakings
made by owners, and inspecting the works carried out to remedy
the defects and disrepair.
The following is a summary of the matters dealt with during the
year:—
