This year the Registrar-General has given his estimate of the midyear
population of Romford as 110,100, which compares with 107,800
for last year, an increase of 2,300.
During 1956, the total number of live births registered was 1901,
and the total number of deaths registered was 722. The difference of
1,179 gives the natural increase in the population. As this number falls
short of the Registrar-General's estimated increase of 2,300, it again
follows that the balance of 1,121 is made up of Immigration over
Emigration.
For 1956, we estimate the Birth Rate to be 14.5 per 1,000 of the
estimated resident population. This figure is obtained by multiplying
the Crude Birth Rate of 17.3 by the Comparability Factor of 0.84. For
last year the Rate was 14.9.
The Rate for England and Wales for 1956 is given as 15.7.
The Death Rate for Romford is estimated at 10.3 per 1,000 of the
estimated resident population. This figure is obtained by multiplying
the Crude Death Rate of 6.6 by the Comparability Factor of 1.56. For
last year the Rate was 9.2. The comparable Rate for England and
Wales is 11.7.
The chief causes of death in order of frequency were: —
(1) Diseases of the Heart and Circulation.
(2) Cancer.
(3) Bronchitis, Pneumonia, and Other Respiratory Diseases.
The Maternal Mortality Rate, which is the number of Maternal
Deaths, due to conditions associated with pregnancy or confinement, per
1,000 total (live and still) births, is 0.51
The Infant Mortality Rate, or the Death Rate of Infants under one
year of age per 1,000 live births, is 22.1, a decrease of 0.9 compared with
the previous year.
The corresponding figure for England and Wales is 23.8.
