(iv) Caravan Sites.
There are 7 licensed caravan sites, one still being controlled by
the Council.
Altogether, there are 218 caravans on these sites. The sites are
maintained in a satisfactory condition.
(v) Prevention of Damage by Pests Act, 1949.
During the year the Sanitary Inspectors, and Rodent Operative
carried out 2,627 inspections, or re-inspections, to premises
suspected of being infested by rats or mice.
Further maintenance treatment, in respect of rat disinfestation
to sewers was undertaken during the year.
(vi) Pet Animals Act, 1951.
Fifteen persons are licensed to keep Pet Shops. Frequent inspections
continue to be carried out.
3.—INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD
(i) Milk Supply.
At the end of the year 38 persons were registered as Retailers,
or Distributors. Of these 14 were licensed to retail Tuberculin
Tested Milk; 19 were licensed to retail Pasteurised Milk ; and 34
were licensed to retail Sterilised Milk.
The two Pasteurising plants are kept under surveillance by the
department.
During the year, 125 samples of milk were taken, and only 2
failed to pass the prescribed test.
(ii) Ice-Cream.
There were at the end of the year 3 manufacturers, and 201
vendors on the register.
During the year, 59 samples were taken for Bacteriological
examination, and of these 52 were satisfactory, and 7 unsatisfactory.
Nineteen samples of ice-lollies were taken, and only 2 proved
unsatisfactory.
Eight samples of ice-cream, and six ice-lollies were taken for
Chemical examination, and all proved satisfactory.
(iii) Meat.
There are 3 licensed slaughterhouses in the Borough, and one
of them is licensed for the slaughter of horses.
Altogether, 24,673 animals were slaughtered for human
consumption.
The Sanitary Inspectors, as usual, paid visits, not only to the
Slaughterhouses, but also to the Meat Depots, Butchers' Shops,
Stalls, etc.
