3.—SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA,
(i) Water.
Mr. H. G. Ramsey, Chief Engineer of the South Essex Waterworks
Company reports as follows with regard to the water supply
of the district:—
"(a) There have been no extensions of public water supply
during the year 1947, other than those necessitated by the supply
to the temporary and permanent housing sites, as under :—
3in. diameter mains 20 yards
4in. ,, ,, 3,777 yards
6in. ,, ,, 1,009 yards
9in. ,, ,, 2,053 yards
Total 6,859 yards
(b) Bacteriological and Chemical examinations are made of
the raw water, of the water in its various stages of treatment,
of the water supplied from the Company's wells,
and of the water going into supply. Analyses are also
made of samples obtained from consumers' taps in the
various parts of the Company's district; all proved to be
satisfactory.
A total of about 3,300 Chemical, Bacteriological and
Biological examinations have been made.
(c) The water supplied was sufficient and wholesome, and the
supply .was constant throughout, with no plumbo-solvent
action."
In addition to the above analyses, independent samples have
again been taken monthly by the Sanitary Inspectors from different
premises in the district. These were submitted for Bacteriological
analysis once per month, and Chemical analysis once per 6 months,
and the results have invariably confirmed the findings of the
Waterworks Company.
