The following tables set out the various Rates for Births,
Deaths, Maternal Mortality, and Infant Mortality since 1938, as
these have not previously been published. These tables also show
a comparison with the rates for England and Wales as a whole
—for 126 County Boroughs and Great Towns, including London
—for 148 Smaller Towns with resident populations of 25,000 to
50,000 at the 1931 Census, and for London.
For the information of the Council the Birth Rate is the number
of live births per 1,000 of the estimated resident populationthe
Death Rate is the number of deaths per 1,000 of the estimated
resident population—the Maternal Mortality Rate is the number
of maternal deaths, due to conditions associated with pregnancy
or confinement, per 1,000 total (live and still) births, and the
Infant Mortality Rate is the number of deaths of infants under
one year of age per 1,000 live births.
All Rates are adjusted for outward and inward transfers.
