Stillbirths
The number of stillbirths registered was 11, equal to a rate of 18.9 of
1,000 total births, compared with 25.8 for 1958.
Deaths
The deaths registered totalled 285, equal to a crude death rate for the year
of 11.1 per 1,000 Home Population compared with 12.0 for 1958.
The area comparability factor calculated by the Registrar-General for the
purpose of securing comparability between local death rates is 0.97. This makes
the Adjusted Death Rate 10.78 compared with 11.7 for the year 1958.
The death rate for England and Wales was 11.6 compared with 11.7 recorded
for 1958.
Deaths among the inmates of an Institution for elderly men numbered 9.
A large proportion of deaths was of elderly people, and of the total deaths
197 or 69.1% were of persons 65 years of age and over compared with 68.8%
the previous year.
Those dying at 75 years of age and over accounted for 47.3% of the total
deaths compared with 45.4% in 1958.
Cancer
Deaths from cancer numbered 50 giving a death rate for Home Population
of 1.9 compared with 2.34 for 1958. The rate for England and Wales was 1.6.
Tuberculosis
There were two deaths from tuberculosis in Penge giving a death rate of
.077. The rate for England and Wales was .085.
Maternal Mortality
There was one maternal death during the year giving a death rate of 1.7.
The rate for England and Wales was 0.38 compared with 0.43 for 1958.
Infantile Mortality
The number of deaths under one year was 11, corresponding to a rate of
19.3 for 1,000 births, compared with a rate of 15.15 for 1958. The infantile
mortality rate for England and Wales was 15.8. All of these infants died under
the age of 3 weeks, and 9 of them under one week; three deaths were from
congenital malformations.
