Population.
The Registrar General's estimate of the total population of the
Urban District, mid-year 1963, was 81,570, which is an increase of
620 over the figure for the previous year. This population figure
gives a density of 3.9 persons to the acre.
The natural increase of population, measured by excess of births
over deaths, was 555.
Births.
1,342 live births appertaining to the area were registered during
1963, of which 650 were males and 692 females. 1,290 of these births
were legitimate and 52 illegitimate. The crude birth rate for the
Urban District was 16.5 per 1,000 total population, which is a
decrease of 0.9 over the rate for the previous year and is below the
rate for England and Wales as a whole (18.2).
The illegitimate birth rate was 38.2 per 1,000 live and still births,
or 3.9 per cent of the total live births. There were 52 illegitimate
live births, of which 26 were males and 26 females.
There was 1 more illegitimate live birth in 1963 than in 1962.
20 stillbirths were registered, giving a rate of 14.7 per 1,000 live
and still births, and 0.2 per 1,000 total population. 12 of the stillbirths
were males and 8 females.
The stillbirth rate of England and Wales as a whole was 17.3
per 1,000 total births.
Infant Mortality.
There were 16 deaths of infants under one year of age in 1963,
which is four less than the figure for the previous year. The infant
mortality rate for the year was 11.9 per 1,000 total live births, which
is well below the figure of 20.9 for the country as a whole.
The table which follows gives the Orpington mortality rate for
legitimate and illegitimate infants, as well as for all infants, and also
shows the comparison between the infant mortality rate in the Urban
District and that for England and Wales during the past ten years.
