The number of new cases of tuberculosis notified during the year
30 and there were 3 deaths from this disease in 1961. The
number of deaths directly due to the disease has thus remained at
the very low level achieved last year.
The figures illustrate the present tendency for the illness to
affect males somewhat later in life than it does females, the male mortality
also being higher in this age group. It has been suggested that
this may be. at least in part, associated with smoking habits.
