Population.
The Registrar General's estimate of the total population of the
Urban District, mid-year 1959, was 74,620 which is an increase of
980 over the figure for 1958, and is equivalent to a density of 3.58
persons to the acre.
The natural increase of population measured by excess of
births over deaths, was 637.
This increase continues the trend noted in previous years, and
the population of the Urban District has risen by 12,200 during the
past ten years.
Births.
The birth rate for 1959 was 18 6 per 1,000 total population.
The adjusted rate for comparison with other areas being 18.2.
The rate of 18.6 is .7 higher than that for the previous year,
and is well above the figure of 16.5 for England and Wales as a
whole.
