Diphtheria and Diphtheria Immunisation.
For the ninth consecutive year, I am pleased to be able to
report a complete absence of this disease in the Urban District.
The County Medical officer has kindly furnished the following
information with regard to diphtheria immunisation.
Of the children resident in the area who were born since 1943,
a total of 1,164 received primary inoculations and 533 received
reinforcing inoculations during 1958.
A total of 10,980 children under the age of 15 years on 31st
December, 1958, have completed a course of immunisation at some
time prior to that date.
Dysentery.
No cases of dysentery were notified during the year.
Compared with 33 in 1957, even when allowance is made for
the possibility of some undetected cases, the situation can be considered
eminently satisfactory, especially in view of the unusual
prevalence of this complaint in recent years.
Food Poisoning.
Sixty-five single cases were notified during the year, 13 being
removed to hospital.
In six cases, the agent was identified as Salmonella Typhimurium,
and in two cases as Staphylococci.
The following is a copy of the annual return of Food Poisoning
notifications (corrected) forwarded to the Ministry of Health.
