average 550 meals per month. The old people are charged 1/per
meal. At Christmas they are given a free meal of turkey and
Christmas pudding. The van was bought and is maintained by
donations from Alexandra Rose Day and Salvage.
Orpington runs two Darby and Joan Clubs, one at Farnborough
and the other at St. Mary Cray.
Visits are paid to old people, and their shopping, filling in
forms, etc. is done for them. Until petrol rationing quite a bit of
transport work was done for the old people, taking them to hospital
and to visit relatives, but this has had to be stopped because of the
rationing.
Orpington and District Old People's Welfare Committee.
The Honorary Secretary has kindly furnished the following
report:—
"During the year we had a series of lectures on problems
connected with the care of old people.
Three hundred visits were made to the sick and needy and in
many cases relief was given, ranging from the usual coal, blankets,
etc., to the repair of a hot water geyser.
Financial aid was given to a few Old People's Clubs in the
Orpington area. Regarding our own club, which is entirely self
supporting 5,000 hot lunches and teas were provided for the
members and the morning coffee buffet was well patronised.
Seventy members took advantage of cheap holiday schemes and
four coach outings to the coast were arranged."
