In general, Grades I and II are satisfactory while Grades
III and IV may indicate some defect in manufacture, storing or
handling. Where a Grade III or IV result is received an
investigation is made and follow-up samples taken.
Restaurant, Hotels and Canteens.
In an effort to intensify the focus on safe food, visits to these
premises were almost doubled during 1951 and I think the trade
is beginning to realise that the early post-war Clean Food campaigns
were not just a " flash in the pan."
We are encouraged by the fact too that the general public
is becoming more food hygiene conscious and is demanding the
best that our efforts can produce.
Unsound Food.
During 1951, a total of one thousand two hundred and fifty
Condemnation Certificates were issued, affecting in quantity
3 tons, 12 cwts, 7 lbs. of varied articles of food. No prosecutions
were necessary, and the condemned food was utilised either for
animal food or, where this was impracticable, destroyed. The
co-operation of the traders was in all cases complete.
