SECTION D.
FACTORIES, OUTWORKERS, SMOKE ABATEMENT,
SHOP ACT, RODENT CONTROL AND VERMINOUS
CONDITIONS AND UNCLEANLINESS.
Factories.
A complete survey and inspection of factories was carried
out during the year and as a result the 1950 total of one hundred
and seventy-nine, was corrected to a figure of one hundred and
thirty-eight. Comparatively few of this number are of any size
and these are situated mainly in the Cray Valley Area.
The survey, which entailed over two hundred inspections,
revealed comparatively few defects and, without exception, these
were remedied by the close of the year.
As with other premises, subject to public health legislation,
an up-to-date card index register has been compiled and facts
and figures giving an overall picture are readily obtainable
therefrom.
Table VI in the Appendix gives details of the inspections
made and of the cases where defects were found.
Outworkers.
Twenty-seven lists of Outworkers were received during the
year and from these I have extracted a list of the trades involved,
together with the number of persons employed.

As stated in my last report, when a case of infectious disease
is notified at an outworker's home steps are taken to ensure that
there is no risk of infection being conveyed by the articles made
thereat.
Smoke Abatement.
Once again the average monthly deposit found in the gauge
at St. Mary Cray corresponds very closely with the results of
previous years.
