The regular collection is interrupted by three causes : sickness
of workmen, inclement weather, Bank Holidays or a
combination of these factors. Following the Easter Holiday, the
work was greatly disorganised due to there being a considerable
number of men on sick leave daily for four weeks.
It is when the work is in arrears that a considerable number
of complaints are received at the office not only with regard to
the delay but also in connection with spilling at the dustbin and
the vehicle. When the collection is carried out regularly on the
same day each week practically no complaints are received which
indicate that the spilling is consequential to the irregular
collection.
The public can help the Council by keeping the amount of
refuse deposited in the bin at a minimum and also by ensuring
that the refuse which is placed in the bin is dry.
During the year a special report was submitted to the Public
Health Committee on the service and full consideration was given
to the system in force. It was decided to continue with the relay
system, the use of skips, to increase the number of collectors and
to provide the foreman with a utility van.
