SECTION 24 - HEALTH VISITING
The duties of the Health Visitors are closely related to the changing needs of the
community and great emphasis is put on the individual requirements of the family.
Therefore a great part of the work is carried out in the privacy of people's own homes
and as will be seen from the following statistics the number of individual home visits,
especially those to families with young children, have increased. The health visitors,
however, are mainly concerned with health education and social advice to encourage and
promote the attainment of complete health within the family group. To achieve this
goal by home visiting alone would be impossible and we have concentrated this year on
group education programmes with the following:-
HEALTH EDUCATION
(a) In Schools
The importance of teaching the principles of healthy living to school children
is well recognised, but for health education to be really effective the young and
adolescents must be made fully aware of the dangers in the formative stages of their
lives. We are therefore trying various experimental schemes of Health Education
in schools in close co-operation with the teaching staff to make the children themselves
aware of the importance of positive health.
(b) Ante-Natal
The ante-natal period has always been considered the period "par excellence"
for health education of the mother and group teaching is continuing in the three
health services clinics and at a general practitioner's surgery, the latter has
been started at the special request of the general practitioner who already had a
health visitor attending his weekly surgery for mothers and children. This has
proved successful and we are endeavouring to extend this scheme to other G.P.s in
the area.
