work carried out by the Geriatric Unit at Langthorne Hospital both as
concerns in-patients and out-patients, and the steadily increasing proportion
of elderly.
However, it is more economical to supply a measure of home help
than to take up hospital beds for long periods.
Problem Families.
The Problem Families Committee which was dealt with fully in last
year's Report met four times during the year, and once again it was
apparent that the co-ordination of the Local Health Authority, Education
and Welfare Authorities, together with the Housing Department of the
Borough Council is most essential to deal with this type of case.
MEDICAL STAFF
In July, 1956, with the retirement of Dr. S. C. Lovell, the Committee
interviewed applicants for the post of Assistant County Medical Officer
of Health.
As a result of the interviews, Dr. G. Trevor Mackinnell Childs was
appointed and commenced duty on 1st August, 1956.
Acknowledgements.
I pay tribute to the valuable help that has been so willingly given
during the year by the officers of the Hospital Management Committee ;
Mr. S. Read of the National Assistance Board, and the Duly Authorised
officers of the County Mental Health Services. It is by such co-operation
that action can be taken without the officiousness that appertains when
it is lacking.
