For the information of Members, these cases and hours have
been analysed in the categories, and I beg to submit the following
report :
Maternity.—There were 14 cases in this category. Of these,
11 were normal cases which did not require assistance other than
during the confinement period and the following two weeks.
Three cases due to complications or other causes have been
assisted since April; one for 27 hours per week, one six hours per
week, and the remaining case for 10 hours per week.
Acute Sick.—This category includes those cases having
haemorrhages, fractures, or cases of post-operative convalescence at
home.
There were 10 cases assisted during the quarter, at a total
expending of 444¾ hours.
One case had two hours a week, one three hours, two four
hours, one five hours, two six hours and three 12 hours. Normally
cases in this category do not require help of over three months.
Tuberculosis.—Twenty of these cases have been assisted. One
case commenced in 1950, one in 1951, two in 1952, four in 1953,
three in 1954, and nine in 1955. Three of the cases have two
hours per week, ten four hours per week, six six hours per week,
and one twenty-six hours per week.
Chronic Sick (Aged).—This category of beneficiary represented
77.69% of the total cases receiving assistance during the quarter
ended 30th September, 1956.
The cases in this category totalled 512. However, this represents
560 persons, inasmuch as in 48 of the cases there were husband
and wife, both of whom would have qualified for help.
Analysis of Cases.
On analysis of the cases, two commenced in 1948, seven in
1949, seven in 1950, 17 in 1951, 23 in 1952, 47 in 1953, 83 in
1954, 131 in 1955, and 195 in the first nine months of this year.
The Beneficiaries fall within the following age groups :—
65—70 years 61 75—80 years 145
70—75 years 142 80-plus 164
It is interesting to note that 18 of the 80-years plus age group
are over 90 years of age, and that, of the 512 cases assisted, 164
(32%) were over 80 years of age.
Analysis of Hours.
During the quarter 26,710 hours of help were allocated to the
Chronic Sick (Aged) category, an average of 2,054 hours per week.
The average amount of help supplied to beneficiaries per week is
between five and six hours.
