TO THE MAYOR, ALDERMEN AND COUNCILLORS OF THE
BOROUGH OF LEYTON
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit this, my second Annual Report, as
required by the Ministry of Health ; and, for the convenience of
Members, this also includes sections on the Health Services (National
Health Service Act—Part III) and the School Health Service.
The Report is being issued later than is usual due to extra duties
carried out by the medical and administrative staff, viz. vaccination
against poliomyelities, the shortage of public health inspectors, and the
great amount of work performed by all the staff in presenting the Health
Exhibition in May, 1957.
The year 1956 was a good year in Leyton's health, not so much by
what was achieved but rather that the foundation was laid for schemes
that have since come to fruition, viz. Crescent Road Re-development
Area, Housing for the Aged, Laundry for the Incontient, and a progressive
interest in the Care of the Elderly, both by the statutory authorities
and the voluntary organisations in the Borough. These are dealt with
more fully in the body of the Report.
I take the opportunity of recording my appreciation of the support
of the Council, the co-operation of officers of other departments and the
loyalty and industry of the staff of the Health Department.
I have the honour to be,
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient servant,
MELVILLE WATKINS
Medical Officer of Health.
