Investigation carried out in conjunction with the Department of
Scientific and Industrial Research.
Investigation.
A description of the procedure adopted for the systematic
measurement of the concentration of atmospheric smoke and sulphur
dioxide was given in my Report for 1950. Daily observations,
which were begun in March 1950, have continued throughout 1953
with the exception of four weeks in March and April, when observations
had to be suspended owing to damage to the apparatus by
trespassers.
The investigation is carried out in full co-operation with the
Fuel Research Station of the Department of Scientific and Industrial
Research. A summary of the observations is included in the monthly
" Atmospheric Pollution Bulletin " published by the Department.
The recording apparatus is situated at the Public Health Department,
Sidmouth Road, E.10.
The following tables show the results recorded during 1953,
together with the corresponding figures for 1952. No results are
available for the month of March, 1953 ; and the figures for April
relate to 14 days only.
