SECTION 21
HEALTH CENTRES.
Former Relief Office Premises, 135, Dawlish Road, E.10.
On the "Appointed Day"—5th July, 1948—the former
Relief Office premises in Dawlish Road, E.10, were allocated to the
County Health Authority for health purposes; and in September
of that year there were submitted the following recommendations
as to how these buildings—together with the land and dwelling
house adjoining—could be utilised for health purposes.
That arrangements be made for the establishment of a
Subsidiary Health Centre in the premises at 135, Dawlish
Road, Leyton.
That the health centre provide the necessary facilities
in connection with the medical, dental and nursing services
of the Health and Education Authorities to serve the area of
the Borough comprising Central North and Central South
Wards.
That authority be given for the structural and decorative
work necessary to adapt the premises for these purposes, and
for the purchase of the necessary furniture and equipment.
Existing Health Centre Facilities.
The two existing health centres in the Borough—at Leyton
Green and Park House—were specially built for the purpose in
1933 and 1935 respectively, and provide accommodation in their
respective areas for the combined medical, dental and nursing
services of the Health and Education Authorities.
Whereas these two centres were considered to be models at the
time they were built, the great expansion in the scope of health
services since that time has been such that they can no longer be
considered adequate.
The establishment of an additional health centre undoubtedly
relieves the overcrowding and congestion at the two existing centres.
The former Relief Office buildings in Dawlish Road are situated
near the centre of that densely-populated part of the Borough
containing the Wards known as Central North and Central South,
with a combined population—according to the last official census
returns—of some 22,414 persons.
