Legal Proceedings. (Food & Drugs Act, 1938.)
In five instances legal proceedings were taken under the
provisions of Section 9 of the above Act, and the following is the
result of such action:—
10/1/51 Paper in sausage £2 fine £2 costs
31/1/51 String in sausage £5 fine £2 costs
31/10/51 Insects in Milk £5 fine
7/11/51 Dirt in Milk £3 fine
7/11/51 Wire in Milk £3 fine
Preparation, Storage and Handling of Food.
An encouraging and pleasing feature has been the steady
improvement in the general standard of food premises. Alterations
in structure and improvements in design have been effected, and
attention paid to siting of food premises and proper use of equipment.
Most important of all, every endeavour is made to promote
the observance of personal hygiene by the staffs engaged; and there
has been a willing response to the advice given by the Sanitary
Inspectors. The more elaborate improvements have naturally
been at premises of the larger business firms—bakers, butchers,
fish-friers and cafes. The food-traders in the district are anxious
to conform to the requirements of the Food and Drugs Act and
the Council's Bye-laws; but high building costs and shortage of
materials are deterrents in their endeavour to reach the ideal.
Ignorance of the dangers likely to result from carelessness is one
of the shortcomings to be overcome. There appears to be more
hope from the employment of the proper type of food handler and
increased education of the staff, rather than from prosecutions for
offences committed.
Food-carrying Vehicles.
Improved types of these are now in use and more attention
is given to clean overalls and head-dress for the use of the men.
Dogs in Food Shops, Restaurants, etc.
In October, 1951, the Ministry of Food issued Circular MF 20/51,
