Drainage.
The drains of 162 houses were reconstructed. In 111 instances
the reconstruction related to portions of the public sewers, and in
these cases the work was carried out under the supervision of the
staff of the Borough Engineer and Surveyor's Department, the
expenses incurred thereby being recovered from the owners.

Prevention of Damage by Pests Act, 1949.
Complaints.
The number of complaints received was higher than in the
previous year, probably due to increased publicity given to the
danger arising from rat and mouse infection.
Every endeavour has been made to comply with the requirements
of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, and an increased
number of business premises were treated.
There is still a large population of rats in the seweis; and
a considerable amount of infestation, not definitely traced, comes
from undiscovered faulty connections to sewers and drains.
It is important that, where buildings are demolished, care
should be exercised in seeing that all openings to the sewer are
effectively sealed, thus preventing unnecessary trouble in later
years.
More education of the general public is needed on the danger to
public health of food contamination by mice.
