During the latter part of the year a Jewellery Class was commenced,
and a new patient desiring to carry out plastic work
was assisted in this direction. During two years the class has grown
from two patients to fourteen, and the County Medical Officer has
arranged for the Instructor and some of the patients to carry out
weaving and jewellery making at Essex County Show to be held in
June, 1952.
Mass Radiography.
Prior to the year under review, the last time public facilities
for mass radiography were available in the Borough was during
the year 1946. As five years is considered to be much too long
an interval between two successive visits by a Mass Radiography
Unit, representation was made to the Regional Hospital Board
for more frequent and more regular visits.
Mass Radiography Unit 6.B was in operation in the Borough
from 6th February until 21st March, 1951, a period of six weeks.
The premises used were those of the Council at 280, High Road,
Leyton. Although by no means ideal, the premises (an empty
shop) had the great advantage of accessibility and situation in
a main road.
On 6th February the opening ceremony was performed, in
the presence of the Chairman of the Health Area Sub-Committee
and Members of the Council, by His Worship the Mayor, who was
the first person to be X-rayed.
In spite of the inclemency of the weather at the time the attendance
of the general public was very satisfactory, and broke all
previous records of the Unit.
After three weeks at 280, High Road, Leyton, the Unit was
transferred for an additional period of three weeks to premises
owned by the North Thames Gas Board. The latter situation
was unfortunate as the approach to the building was through
a sports field, which became a quagmire during wet weather.
