TO THE MAYOR, ALDERMEN AND COUNCILLORS OF
THE BOROUGH OF LEYTON.
Mb. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to present herewith my Annual Report
on the health, sanitary circumstances and vital statistics of the
Borough of Leyton during the year 1950.
Vital Statistics.
The Registrar-General's estimate of the population of the
Borough of Leyton during the year 1950 is 106,600 persons, a
reduction of 100 persons compared with the previous year. The
last official census of the population was taken in 1931, and the
results of the 1951 census are not yet available.
For the third year in succession there has been an appreciable
fall in the birth rate, which is now the lowest since 1941, an
abnormal war year in which a large number of Leyton expectant
mothers were evacuated to safer areas. In 1950 the total number
of live births was 1,447, a decrease of 183 compared with the
previous year; and the birth rate has fallen from 15.27 to 13.57.
The lowest birth rate recorded in Leyton was the rate of 11.78
in the year 1934.
Year. Births. Birth Rate.
1945 1,474 16.87
1946 2,223 21.81
1947 2,359 22.35
1948 1,810 17.06
1949 1,630 15.27
1950 1,447 13.57
These figures show the extent of the sudden post-war increase
in births which reached its maximum in 1947, and the progressive
annual decrease that has taken place since then.
Deaths of Leyton residents during the year numbered 1,134,
giving a death rate of 10.64. The corresponding figures for the
previous year were 1,232 and 11.54 respectively.
