Hearing Aid and Lip Reading Cases.
Some further explanation of these cases is necessary. Two
brothers were admitted from another area to the E.S.N. School
because of presumed low-grade intelligence. It was quickly noticed
that they suffered from high-frequency deafness and were of average
intelligence. They are awaiting transfer to Partially Deaf Schools.
The one more severely affected has a hearing aid, the other is being
investigated still for this. Both have been under the speech
therapist for lip reading for a year and have made excellent progress
in speech and lip reading. They are doing well in school, as the
small classes in the special school give them a better chance than
in the ordinary school. It is hoped they will be moved soon to
Partially Deaf Schools.
The two other cases recommended lip reading are low grade
defectives, and their deafness is not really so much affected as
their intelligence. They should not be in this category at all.
The Children in the Educationally Subnormal School.
Miss O'Leary tested every child in this School, even those in
the "entrants class", where mental ages of 3-4 are to be found.
This really invalidates the figures, as the test requires more concentration
and intelligence than these children can give. No Infant
School children were tested anywhere because of this fact. Onethird
of the cases reported as having defective hearing in the
E.S.N. School should not have been tested.
