Large scale group testing was carried out in the Leyton Primary
Schools by the Head Teachers, and the Educational Psychologist
prepared a report on the general intellectual ability of the 10-year
old children in the Leyton Schools (1,091 tested) from the results
of the tests. This report was finally submitted to the Leyton
Committee for Education.
Remedial teaching of 13 children was carried out in the Child
Guidance Centre during the year, eight in reading, two in arithmetic,
two in both reading and arithmetic, and one in spelling. These
children are selected for this special help by the Psychiatrist.
Various lectures have been given to Parents' Associations and
other organisations and the Psychologist took part in a short course
at Wansfell Residential Adult College, Theydon Bois. Unfortunately,
the course of lectures for teachers on "Problems in the Primary
and Secondary Schools" had to be abandoned because of illness.
As in 1949, there was a period of about six months in 1950
when there was no Psychiatric Social Worker for the Leyton and
Forest Divisions. This inevitably increased the work of the
Psychologist in the Centre, with a coresponding decrease in the
amount of time available for work in schools.
