In July, as the result of certain difficulties in the rigid application
of that scheme of priority in the admission of children, it was
decided that category 2 should include mothers divorced from,
separated from or deserted by their husbands; and that motherless
children be placed in category 1.
Joint Committee.
In accordance with the recommendation contained in the
Joint Circular from the Ministry of Health (221/45) and the Ministry
of Education (75), in January the Council set up a Joint Committee
of representatives of the Maternity and Child Welfare Committee
and the Education Committee to consider future policy with regard
to nursery provision for children under five years.
At their meeting in February this Joint Committee decided on
the following estimate of the number of children for whom it is
anticipated that nursery accommodation will be required:—
Under 2 years 60 children
Between 2 and 5 years 150 children
As a matter of long-term policy, the Education Authority's proposals
are for the establishment of five nursery schools for children
from 2 to 5 years of age.
