Civil Defence Casualty Service.
In spite of the great amount of time and energy devoted to
the organisation, staffing, equipment and operation of the Council's
Civil Defence Casualty Services during the war years, at the
request of the Government Departments concerned and in the
interests of national security no reference to these activities has
been made in any of my annual reports. I should like to take
this opportunity of conveying to all members of the Council's
Civil Defence Casualty Services, both full-time and part-time, my
sincere appreciation of their loyal and devoted service.
General.
Ever since 1935 the Committees and staff responsible for the
work of the Health Department have been engaged in organising
and operating formidable services designed to preserve the health
and sanitary environment of those who were fortunate enough to
escape personal injury from enemy action, and to minister to the
suffering of those not so fortunate. It would be impossible in a
report such as this to describe in detail the manifold special wartime
services for which the Department was responsible, or to
give any adequate idea of the indomitable spirit which was shown
in the shouldering of responsibilities foreign to the work of a
Health Department in time of peace. These extra war-time
services could not have been operated without the loyal devotion
to duty and whole-hearted co-operation of the members of the
permanent staff of the Department, to whom I accord my sincere
appreciation and thanks.
I have the honour to be,
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient servant,
