37
children were ill only for a few hours. One child, who had no
symptoms at the time of the investigation, was discovered to have
had diarrhoea on 4th October, when two other members of the
family were ill. Three negative swabs taken at three-day intervals
were required before any infected child was allowed to return to
the Nursery. In addition, the two children under one year who
were in attendance at the Nursery were excluded until 3rd November
by which time it was judged that the outbreak was checked, and
new admissions were accepted.
Eight of the 14 infected persons gave only one positive swab.
This included the probationer. For all except two children the
last positive swabs were received on 23rd October. The remaining
two were still positive on 11th November (although in each case
the previous swab had been negative); and it was decided to give
a course of succinyl sulphathiazole (20 grammes) spread over five
days, i.e. 4 grammes a day. At the conclusion of the course further
swabs were taken and were found to be negative.
