Instructions by the Ministry of Food for the treatment of
sewers were carried out by the Public Health Department in conjunction
with the Borough Surveyor and Engineer's Department.
Treatment of the sewers was commenced on 6th December,
1943; and the first treatment, which involved the baiting of 600
manholes, was completed on 17th January, 1944. Difficulty was
experienced in obtaining labour for the work, and the shortage of
sewer men limited the number of squads whicl^ could be used.
