Borough, while visiting homes, at clinics and in schools have
contributed in no small measure to the steady flow of applications
of parents for the immunisation of their children.
The school teachers have also afforded much valuable help
in the campaign. In order that teachers might have the opportunity
of acquainting themselves with the scientific reasons for
immunisation and thereby being in a better position to advocate
preventive inoculation to parents I arranged with the Director of
Education to give lectures to school teachers after school hours.
The lectures were repeated four times, and many teachers attended.
A definite increase in the number of school children attending the
Clinics took place after the lectures, and many of the children were
accompanied by their pre-school brothers and sisters. In this way
the teachers helped to guide many young children to the immunisation
clinics.
Children at War-time Day Nurseries who had not been
immunised were given treatment. The figures are included with
the Clinic figures.
Since 1941 Alum Precipitated Toxoid (A.P.T.) supplied by
the Sector Laboratory on behalf of the Ministry of Health has
almost completely replaced Toxoid Antitoxin Flocules (T.A.F.) as
the immunising agent. This material is very excellent and 98 per
cent, of children are immune after two small injections.
Incidence of Diphtheria Among Protected Persons.
It is not claimed that artificial immunisation will prevent a
person from infection by diphtheria organisms. What is claimed
is that successful artificial immunisation will prevent the immunised
person from developing the dangerous toxaemic manifestations of
diphtheria.

During 1942 two Leyton children, who had been immunised previously, wero notified to be suffering from diphtheria. The following table gives in summary form the information regarding these cases.
