PHYSICAL TRAINING.
I am indebted to the Director of Education for the following
information regarding the description of arrangements for physical
training in the Authority's Elementary Schools :—
The work of the year under review includes that carried out
before the Government Evacuation Scheme and the progress of
Physical Training in the Reception Area.
Teachers' Courses.
During the Spring Term courses of instruction were conducted
by the Organisers of Physical Training for teachers in Infant,
Junior, Senior and Central Schools. All aspects of the appropriate
teaching of Physical Training in the schools were covered by the
courses. As a result, a fuller understanding of the aims and a more
effective application of the principles of Physical Education is
apparent in the work of the schools. The enthusiasm with which
the teachers entered into the Schemes made the holding of the
courses a real pleasure.
A short course in Central European Dancing was arranged by
the County Education Authority. This was held in the Borough
of Leyton and was attended by several of the women teachers.
This was the first opportunity that the teachers had of learning
something of this particular approach to dancing, and much interest
was aroused.
Footwear, Clothing and Storage.
The policy of providing plimsolls for every child in the Borough
was completed by the inclusion of the Infant schools in the scheme.
At the same time, clothing for Physical Training purposes was
supplied to the Senior and Central Schools, thereby enabling first
and second year children to be equipped in this respect. Additional
storage lockers were provided for the increased supply of clothing.
Organised Games.
By arrangement with the owners, the ground formerly used by
the Essex County Cricket Association was rented for organised
games during school hours on certain days of the week during the
summer months, and proved a valuable addition to the facilities for
organised games in the Borough.
