On the outbreak of war the Leyton Council's arrangement
with Queen Mary's Hospital, Stratford, for the provision of maternity
beds in the Margaret Lyle Maternity Wing of the Hospital
ceased to operate as the Maternity Wing was then closed in order
to provide for the reception of air raid casualties. After that
date the only local Hospital with available maternity beds was
Forest Gate Hospital, which is administered by the Public Assistance
Committee ; and arrangements were made for the admission
to that institution of Leyton expectant mothers who were considered
to require institutional treatment and care.
In November your Council entered into an agreement with
the Mother's Hospital, Clapton, for the provision of maternity
bed accommodation on the following terms :—
Total cost per bed for fourteen days :
Five guineas for first confinements.
Four guineas for subsequent confinements.
Any case kept in hospital more than fourteen days
is charged at the rate of 6s. Od. per additional day.
Nursing Homes Registration Act, 1927.
There are three registered nursing homes in the Borough.
These institutions were inspected on 9 occasions.
Home Helps.
Under the Council's scheme for the provision of home helps,
141 applications for home helps were dealt with. In 102 cases (15
of whom made application in 1938), home helps were provided,
22 of these cases having the charges remitted in accordance with the
Council's scale. In the 54 remaining cases, 27 made other arrangements
for the confinement, and 27 cases had not been confined at
the end of the year.
Puerperal Pyrexia.
Twenty-two cases of puerperal pyrexia were notified during
the year.
