It will be seen that the chief decreases were in deaths from
heart disease (73), influenza (36) and bronchitis (31).
Table 2, page 17, gives the official list of the principal causes
of death in the different age groups.
Graph 2 shows the variation in the death rate in Leyton since
the year 1918. The diagram shows in striking fashion the effect
of the great epidemic of Influenza in 1918, and also that of the
Influenza epidemic of 1929, which was responsible in great measure
for the increased mortality during that year. (See page 19.)

Zymotic Death Rate.—The deaths during the year from the
seven principal zymotic diseases were as follows :—

The zymotic death rate for 1938 was 0.13 per thousand of the
population compared with a rate of 0.17 for the previous year.
