MEASLES EPIDEMIC, 1936.
In and around London widespread outbreaks of measles occur
with explosive suddenness at regular intervals of two years. The
first cases of the 1936 epidemic came to my notice about the middle
of February. Thereupon there was put into operation the procedure,
outlined in my Annual Report for the year 1932, which had
been found to be effective during the previous epidemics. Daily
information was obtained from head teachers and school attendance
officers regarding all cases of measles or suspected measles coming
to their notice. In addition, information was received from the
health visitors regarding pre-school children.
Incidence.
During the whole year there were brought to my notice from
these sources 1,556 cases, of which 1,539 occurred during the epidemic
period (i.e., approximately February-June).
The age distribution was as follows:—
Under 1 19
1 to 2 years 59
2 to 5 years 267
Over 5 years 1,211
1,556
