FACTORY AND WORKSHOP ACTS, 1901 and 1907.
Factories include all places in which mechanical power is
used, and are inspected by H.M. Inspector of Factories, and
apart from dealing with any nuisances remediable under the Public
Health Act that he may notify, our Inspectors do not interfere.
It is the duty of the District Council to secure proper provision
of means of escape in case of fire and the enforcement
of sufficient sanitary accommodation. This work is carried out
by the Surveyor.
73 visits were made to factories and seventeen notices served
to remedy defects found.
Workshops include any premises (not being Factories) in
which manual labour is exercised by way of trade and for the purposes
of gain in, and incidental to, the making, altering, repairing,
finishing or adapting for sale of any article, and to or over which
the employer of the persons working there has the right of access
or control.
497 workshops were inspected during the year and 296
nuisances remediable under the Public Health Acts, or contravening
the Factory and Workshop Acts, dealt with, and revisits
made until the necessary work had been carried out.
283 workshops remain on the register.
