When I have (1) educated the baby to desire to feed every
three hours for the first three months of life, (2) arranged the
mother's daily life upon a hygienic basis and still the milk is
insufficient, I then advise the mother to bathe with cold and hot
water alternately the breasts night and morning, and of course
the mouth is attended to by the Dentist, oral sepsis being a very
usual cause of failure to breast-feed the baby. At Leytonstone
when these measures fail I apply Faradisation (electric treatment)
to the breasts twice or three times a week. This is carried out
under my directions by Sister Alice's Nurses, and the results have
surpassed my expectations. In most cases the child improves in
health, and an average gain of to 5 ounces is maintained if
the patients are able to attend regularly for treatment. I may
say that this work is original, and whilst I feel sure that electric
treatment will be utilised very largely in the future, it was at the
Leyton and Leytonstone Centres that the work was first
originated. Nurse Dodd and Nurse Bratton at the Town Hall,
and Sister Alice's Nurses at Harrow Green, have helped by their
untiring work and care to make the experiment a real success, and
1 have to thank Major Taylor for allowing this work to be carried
out under excellent conditions and for the help he permitted his
Nurses to give.
It is a pleasure to be able to state that the regular staff, the
voluntary helpers, and the Nurses of the Essex Nursing Association
have all worked together in the happiest possible manner,
with one aim only—the good of the cause—and that no friction
of any kind whatever has occurred.
DUTIES OF THE HEALTH VISITORS.

presides over the Vicarage Road Clinic.
Nurse Bratton visits in the Harrow Green and Grove Green
Wards and presides over the People's Hall Clinic.
Nurse Roake visits in the Cann Hall and Forest Wards and
assists at the Town Hall and Vicarage Road Clinics.
Nurse Clipstone (part-time) visits in the Leytonstone Ward.
