An Ante-Natal Clinic is held at the People's Hall on Tuesday
mornings and was first opened in September, 1917.
Recognising the important part played in the health of the
mother of a clean mouth and sound teeth, arrangements were
made in January, 1918, for the dental treatment of expectant and
nursing mothers. This treatment is carried out at the Town
Hall, the services of the School Dentist and the School Dental
Nurse being requisitioned for the purpose.
Milk is supplied free to children and nursing mothers where,
in the opinion of the Medical Officer of Health, it is necessary.
Dr. Elizabeth Sloan Chesser attends all the Clinics and is
assisted by the Health Visitors, Sister Alice and her Nurses of
the Essex County Nursing Association and other lady Voluntary
Helpers.
The voluntary ladies, of whom Miss Lister is the acknowledged
head, render help in many and various ways, by giving tea
to the mothers, instructing them in making garments for the
children, assisting in the clerical work, etc., etc.
To the Ministers of the Baptist Church, Leytonstone, and
the Baptist Church, Vicarage Road, and their workers, we owe
a debt of gratitude for the use of their premises and for their
invariable kindness, interest, and practical help.
It will thus be seen that the Infant Welfare Campaign in
Leyton is built upon a thoroughly sound foundation which will
bear the super-structures which have been, and will be, added for
years to come, without fear of any subsidence.
INFECTIOUS DISEASE.
No case of Plague, Cholera, Smallpox, Typhus or Dysentery
has been notified during the year.
SPECIAL REPORT ON INFLUENZA.
The very fatal epidemic of Influenza which occurred at the
latter period of the year affected Leyton from the middle of
October till the end of the year, the maximum number of deaths
occurring between October 12th and November 30th. During
those seven weeks this disease caused 308 deaths.
