OPHTHALMIC SURGEON'S REPORT FOR THE
YEAR 1918.

The selection of new cases for Ophthalmic examination is
made from:—
(1) Children found with defective vision by the School
Medical Officer at the School.
(2) Children suffering from obvious defects sent to the
School Clinic by the teachers.
674 cases were seen at the Clinic. A further 149 were notified,
but failed to attend.
Of the 674 new cases, the defects were as follows:—
Myopia 119
Myopic astigmatism 50
Hypermetropia 92
Hypermetropic astigmatism 93
Mixed astigmatism 39
Hypermetropia with squint 72
Myopia with squint 6
Squint only 48
Odd eyes 15
Various diseases 60
No defect 69
Refused treatment 3
VARIOUS DISEASES.
These include nystagmus 6, optic atrophy 1, night blindness
1, artificial eye 1, and choroiditis 1. The remainder were cases
of corneal ulcer, corneal opacity and ciliary spasm.
Eight cases suffering from high myopia were excluded from
School for varying periods.
There is now a second section of the Clinic for any of the
children who are found to be suffering from conditions requiring
supervision, such as myopia and squint. These report at
intervals of 3-9 months.
