FACTORY AND WORKSHOP ACTS, 1901 and 1907.
Factories include all places in which mechanical power is
used, and are inspected by H.M. Inspector of Factories, and
apart from dealing with any nuisances remediable under the Public
Health Act that he may notify, our Inspectors do not interfere.
It is the duty of,the District Council to secure proper provision
of means of escape in case of fire and the enforcement
of sufficient sanitary accommodation. This work is carried out
by the Surveyor.
One notification was received from H.M. Inspector in reference
to a factory being without satisfactory means of escape in
case of fire. This matter was referred to the Surveyor and
dealt with by him.
Eleven factories were visited and three notices served to
remedy defects found.
Workshops include any premises (not being Factories) in
which manual labour is exercised by way of trade and for the purposes
of gain in, and incidental to, the making, altering, repairing,
finishing or adapting for sale of any article, and to or over which

or control.
288 workshops were inspected during the year and 130
