among whom in times of peace there would have been but few
deaths.
BIRTHS.
The number of births continues to decline. 2,655 births
were registered—1,372 males and 1,282 females—yielding a birthrate
of 21.3 per 1,000 of the population.
Of the above 68 were illegitimate births, 30 being males and
38 females.
Illegitimate birth-rate, .55 per 1,000 of the population.

DEATHS.
1,237 deaths of Leyton residents* were registered during the
year—643 males and 594 females.
To these must be added 133 males and 140 females, being
deaths ("transferable") received from the Registrar-General.
