The number of new houses erected in the district during the
year 1911 was only 79.
But as the number of houses occupied by two or more families
is steadily increasing, the average number of persons per house will
be found to be greater at the next Census than at the last.
The demand for houses in Leyton may be gauged from the
return of uninhabited houses; these, which in 1912 numbered 921,
have now dropped to 361.
The above facts indicate some of the difficulties encountered
in attempting to arrive at an estimate of the population, the only
remedy for which is a more frequent Census.
For the purposes of this year's report 1 am taking 130,847 to
be our population, which closely approximates to the figure
arrived at by the Registrar-General by his revised method of
estimating population.

BIRTHS.
During the year 2,800 births were registered, giving a birthrate
of 21.4 per 1,000 of the population.
Of these, 1,421 were males and 1,379 females.
