Mean temperatures: Maximum, 51.1°; minimum,
41.2°.
Rainfall at Leyton, 2.53 inches.
December.—Rain, floods, gales.
Weather warmer than the normal until the 18th, was
succeeded by colder weather with severe frosts; the
lowest temperature recorded was 7°, viz., at Balmoral
on the 22nd and at Braemar on the 25th. On the 23rd
and 24th at some places in the Midlands the thermometer
failed to rise to 32°.
Dense fog accompanied the cold calm atmosphere
of the 24th and extended to the coasts but during the
month coastal fogs were infrequent.
Bright sunshine occurred in some places to a greater
extent than the normal, as at Blackpool, but in a few
places there was a deficiency.
An excessive rainfall marked the month, being in
many parts without precedent. In the Thames valley
more rain fell than during any December during the last
50 years. Snow fell during the last fortnight but as a
rule it quickly disappeared.
There were many gales during the month, some
very violent, and one on the 28th accompanied by heavy
snowfall.
Mean temperatures : Maximum, 47.1°; minimum,
39.3°.
Rainfall at Leyton, 5.26.
