The latrines belonging to all the schools in the district were
cleansed, lime whited and overhauled, and the drains flushed during
the Easter vacation.
The suggestion contained in my Report of last year as to
the necessity for the school windows being cleaned between the
Summer and Christmas vacations, in addition to the four annual
cleanings they now receive, has not been acted upon.
I wish to again bring this matter under the notice of the
committee.
Each school has been supplied with four toilet boxes and a
supply of paper for use in the latrines; the estimated cost being
£9 16s. for the boxes, and £28 annually for the paper.
The ordinary mica flaps provided to the drain air-inlets being
continually reported by the Sanitary Inspectors to be out of order,
frequently through the mischievous interference of the scholars, I
suggested the use of Barker's patent air-inlets, which cannot be
thus interfered with. The committee have in consequence
instructed the architect in future to replace any defective air-inlets
by ones of this pattern.

In September the Council decided on an additional exit in rase
of fire, and agreed to provide an external iron staircase leading
from the upper floor of the Boys' Department.
